Gifts of the Trail

APRIL 2014 - our pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago begins

"Memories are the key not to the past, but to the future." ~ Corrie Ten Boom

Looking back at my time on the Appalachian Trail in thanksgiving for 415 miles.

This man shared his salami, swiss cheese and French Bread at Charlie's Bunion

“When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.”  ~Henri J.M. Nouwen, The Road to Daybreak - A Spiritual Journey

Some of the incredible people I had the privilege to meet on the Appalachian Trail in approximately the order I met them.  I consider each one a gift from God.

I didn't get pictures of everyone but I listed their names. I met so many great people and often I was exhausted at the end of the day and didn't remember to record their names so this is not a complete list.

Each one touched my life and left their indelible mark on my soul. Thank you.

Snowman completed a thru-hike in early 2000 (I think) but hoped to do it again with his wife.

A Portable Oasis in the Wilderness

In her words:   "I made it GA-->Maine; all 14 states; just shy of 2000 miles (1,965.5 to be exact).  I didn't quite reach Katahdin, the terminus of the AT.  Remember that little setback in the ER in Massachusetts?  Well, after getting my full pack returned to me in Gorham NH, and hiking for a few days with that, I realized that my back was not as healed up as I was hoping.  Maine is a very remote place, and I was realizing going into the 100 mile wilderness may not be the best idea with my back still not completely healed.  I certainly don't want to deal with MRSA in the wilderness. G-4 (my husband, Nick)

G-4 is an Army term for logistics/supply. Without his support, I would not have been able to continue the journey through so many starts and stops ... he drove over 2,000 miles in the course of supporting me. PRICELESS !

“God made the world for the delight of human beings-- if we could see His goodness everywhere, His concern for us, His awareness of our needs: the phone call we've waited for, the ride we are offered, the letter in the mail, just the little things He does for us throughout the day. As we remember and notice His love for us, we just begin to fall in love with Him because He is so busy with us -- you just can't resist Him. I believe there's no such thing as luck in life, it's God's love, it's His.” ~Mother Teresa
